Legendary football coach visits El Dorado

Football: Legendary University of Alabama Head Football Coach Gene Stallings delivers the keynote address Saturday during the Fourth Annual Londy Awards at the El Dorado Municipal Auditorium. The event was hosted by the Rosson Phillips Group and included several managers and agents from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kansas. Stallings, who also coached professional teams such as the St. Louis Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys, discussed lessons learned through his relationship with his son as well as legendary Alabama coach Bear Bryant who Stallings worked under.

Camp Fire begins annual candy sale Camp Fire El Dorado is holding its annual candy sale, a decades-old tradition, through Feb. 12. Proceeds from the sale will be applied toward a full range of programs and services that directly enrich the lives of youth in the area. Varieties of World’s Finest Chocolate candy available include chocolate covered almonds, caramel whirls, mint meltaways, chocolate almond bars, chocolate covered raisins and crisp bars. Boxes are sold for $2 each. Candy may be purchased from any Camp Fire member or by calling the Camp Fire office at 862-3463. Camp Fire Clubs will also be selling candy at various locations in town including at Walmart on Saturday, on Feb. 2 and on Feb. 10.

Burning Barrel of Love

Meet Me at the 'Barrel': Antonio Edington, left, and Larry Brown, center, receive dinner plates from 11-year-old Jiquaeveon Jefferson at the “Burning Barrel of Love” in El Dorado’s Ward 3 Saturday. The plates consisted of barbecue ribs, fried fish, baked beans and potato salad. Alderman Will McGhee led in prayer after Meet Me at the Court’s founder and director Veronica Bailey along with the children delivered dinners to ‘Burning Barrel’ visitors. The activity is part of goodwill service project for the children of the Meet Me at the Court organization.

City explores options in opioid fight

After a lengthy discussion that included an emotional testimony from a city alderman, the El Dorado City Council decided not to participate in efforts by the state to pursue legal action against pharmaceutical companies in the fight against the opioid crisis that is ravaging Arkansas and the U.S.
