The South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra is inviting the community to "Wave Old Glory!" and celebrate Memorial Day with the return Symphony on the Square.

The show is set for 7 p.m. on May 27 on the Union County Courthouse square.

Admission is free. Hotdogs and hamburgers will also be available to the public for free.

Sara Coffman, executive director of SASO, said the concert will feature popular patriotic tunes led by soprano soloist Nancy Carey.

Carey holds a bachelor's degree in music from Centenary College of Louisiana; a Master of Music degree from Louisiana State University; and a doctorate degree in Musical Arts from the University of Memphis.

She is a past vocal division winner of the Marjorie Stricklin Emerging Artist Competition and in 2018, Carey was selected as a Teaching Fellow with the International Performing Arts Institute in Germany.

Carey has performed in concerts and operas across the U.S. and Europe.

She has been a featured performer with SASO -- including the Symphony on the Square Memorial Day concert and Holiday Pops concerts --, the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra and the Prisma Vocal Ensemble.

In a production of "The Lovely Galatea" Carey starred in the title role during Opera Memphis' Midtown Opera Festival.

As an ambassador of new music, Carey originated the role of "Tish" in the premiere of "Destiny: Hope," a chamber opera by composer Costas Dafnis.

The soprano also regularly performs in the annual New Music on the Bayou Festival. The 2023 festival is scheduled May 31 - June 3 in Ruston and Monroe, both in Louisiana.

The Symphony on the Square Memorial Day celebration was launched in 2007 by SASO and then-sponsor First Financial Bank to show appreciation for military veterans and active-duty servicemen and women and for the community as a whole.

"SASO's program includes all our favorite patriotic songs, along with Nancy Carey singing hits that we all can sing along to," Coffman said. "Please join us for this celebration. Bring you your chair, have some fun, visit friends and "Wave Old Glory!"

SASO is led by musical director and composer Kermit Poling.
