A new organization formed to benefit women survivors of sexual exploitation is hosting one of its first events this week - a ladies only ball called “Not Your Momma’s Moth Ball.”

The event, set for 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, will benefit the Magdalene House of El Dorado, which announced its formation in December and began through St. Mary’s Episcopal Church where Magdalene House of El Dorado board president Becky Choate works.

In order to start the program, the group is looking to buy a house where several women will be able to live, once they go through an interview process and establish that they are not using drugs. Women living in the home will be provided everything from medical, dental and mental health services to every day necessities, as well as education and job training, in the two-year program.

When the group first announced its intentions, Choate told the News-Times that the idea originated with Magdalene House Nashville, founded by Becca Stevens in 1996.

The event Thursday is billed as a moth ball as it asks attendees to dig out old dresses from proms, parties or weddings (including bridal gowns) to wear to the event, which will feature music, drinks and food.

Tickets cost $35 for entry, food and one beverage; $70 for entry, food, all drinks, raffles and a wine pull; and $100 for an all inclusive ticket with pick and delivery by a chauffeur. Tickets are available at the St. Mary’s office or eventbrite.com. For more information, contact 870-863-7064.
