Huttig mayoral runoff election to be held Tuesday

Huttig voters will head to the polls Tuesday to decide a runoff election between mayoral candidates Tony Cole and Larry Hodge.

During the General Election in November, 173 total votes were cast in the Huttig mayoral race. Cole, a Democrat, received 67 votes, while Hodge, an Independent, received 54 votes and David Lee, also an Independent, received 52 votes.

Early voting began at the Union County Courthouse on Nov. 27.

On Tuesday, voters will cast their ballots at to the Huttig polling site at the Huttig Community Center, 501 Frost St.

Voting will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday

Election Commissioner Kermit Parks said any registered voter in Huttig can cast their vote in the mayoral election, “because it’s not a crossover.”

“It’s not Democrat and Republican,” he said. “This is just a runoff, so any registered voter who resides in the city limits of Huttig can vote.”

Parks said the results of the election will be announced Tuesday night. On Dec. 10, Parks said, they will certify results and make them official at 9 a.m.

According to the 2017 United States Census Bureau, Huttig has a population of almost 550.

Parks said they were not expecting a high turnout for the runoff.

“Looking at the previous elections in the county, unfortunately it’s not a high turnout,” he said. “We have to remember that all elections are important and if you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice.”
