Trojans fall at Hazen

HAZEN - Parkers Chapel saw their season come to an end on Friday night, as Hazen used a pair of second-half touchdowns to pull away to top the Trojans 30-6 in the opening round of the 2A playoffs.

Hazen led 14-6 at intermission, but any hopes of a comeback were thwarted by the aforementioned second-half touchdowns.

The Hornets (8-2), the 6-2A’s No. 1 seed, won their seventh straight and will host Magnet Cove, a 43-6 winner over Hackett, in the second round next week.

The Trojans (6-5), who were the 8-2A’s No. 5 seed, lost for the fifth straight year in the opening round.

The Trojans got their lone points on a 73-yard strike from Caleb Jacobs to Canon Morgan, but couldn’t dent the scoreboard further against the 6-2A champions.

“We had our chances, we just didn’t finish drives,” said Parkers Chapel coach Jacob Midyett. “That’s been the story of our season.”

Jacobs went 10-of-27 passing for 172 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Trojans.

Morgan hauled in four passes for 97 yards with a touchdown for the Trojans, who had 190 yards of total offense.

Defensively, Austin Massey and De’Qua Henderson had interceptions for the Trojans.

Hazen had 351 yards of total offense, all of which came on the ground.

Although the Trojans fell short in their quest to win their first playoff game since 2010, they reached the postseason for the fifth straight year, and Midyett hopes his team will improve on their showing in 2017.

“I’m very proud of each and every one of them,” Midyett said.

“I think we took a big step as a program. Now we need to take that next step.”
