Severe weather hits Union County

A round of severe weather consisting of torrential rains and violent thunderstorms bearing strong winds entered Union County late Saturday evening as it spread across north Louisiana and south Arkansas.

The National Weather Service in Shreveport issued a tornado warning around 7:35 p.m. after dispatching multiple alerts.

The severe weather dropped quarter sized hail and causing damage to at least one home, according to the National Weather Service.

Emergency sirens could be heard throughout El Dorado as heavy rains pounded Union County. According to Bobby Braswell, county coordinator of the Union County Emergency management said, “There is one tree removed from the road by the airport in the eastbound lane. There is quite a bit of wind in that area from Goodwin Field toward El Dorado for about a mile. There were lots of dead limbs and twigs. That’s about as far as any damage I’ve seen so far.”

A mobile home in Lawson reportedly suffered roof damage with reports of damage coming from the Parker’s Chapel area. According to witnesses, the canopy covering the fuel pumps at the Dixie Food Mart swayed backed and forth as stormy weather passed through Parkers Chapel. The roof of a carwash adjacent to the convenience store was blown away and the walls caved in crushing Annie Knight’s 2013 Honda Fit. Knight had parked her car into the bay of the carwash to protect it from the damage of hail.
