Make it one to remember: Independence Day 2015

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

As your family comes in, or you go to visit abroad, don’t forget why those fireworks are blasting across the country this weekend.

If you’re around town, as always, we have some great shows planned for the holiday weekend, including the Project SOUTH-sponsored fireworks show at the Parkers Chapel football field and a public fireworks display by the ELKS for a conclusion of their two-night Grown Folks event.

Tonight will be filled with Independence Day pre-parties, with Pandora’s Lounge and the Brickhouse hosting DJs and birthday parties.

July babies will get in free before midnight tonight at the Brickhouse as part of the celebration.

On Saturday, the Brickhouse will be hosting Ghetto Cowboy and Vickie Baker as a part of the Independence Day Bash, Pandora’s Lounge will also be hosting live music for those who RSVP.

Another great offering to our community starts tonight, as well.

The American Legion’s first eight-ball pool tournament will begin at 7 p.m., and according to the great folks at the Legion, it should draw a good group.

Bar Manager Ray Buzbee has been working to make some major improvements to the club, and I think that’s fantastic for our community.

We have many veterans in this area that I know would utilize the entertainment Club 10 is now offering.

Along with new pool tables, the club has also updated its bar and added a pinball and arcade Ms. Pacman machine.

I want to remind everyone again that the club is open for BINGO every Thursday night, and there are other regular dances and events.

I’d also like to take the time to offer a gentle reminder to those who will be shooting fireworks privately this year to be considerate of the servicemen and women in your area.

We live in a world much different than the world in which they live, and though the rockets and explosions may be fun for us, for others, it can bring back traumatic memories.

I find it so ironic that the very symbol we use to remember our freedom can be stressful for the ones that fought for it.

No matter what you do this weekend, I wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday.

Have a fantastic, safe and memorable Fourth of July, everyone!
