Deputies under investigation for May arrest

CONWAY (AP) — The Faulkner County sheriff's office is conducting an internal investigation to determine if two deputies used excessive force during a May arrest.

Sheriff Andy Shock confirmed to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Tuesday that the investigation was underway and said that the two deputies are on paid administrative leave.

Shock said two men were arrested May 5 after one fired shots at deputies' cars during a high-speed chase between Mayflower and Conway.

He said the men resisted arrest and suffered scrapes and bruises.

They were treated at Conway Regional Medical Center and were released.

Shock said, "In my opinion, I think they (the deputies) will" get to return to work.

Video of one man's arrest was recorded on a Mayflower police officer's body camera and it showed that police dragged that man from the car, according to Shock.

The other suspect exited the vehicle and led police on a short foot chase.

Prosecuting Attorney Cody Hiland declined to release the video because he said it's part of the investigations into the suspects and the two deputies.

Mayflower police also declined to release the video or a police report on the arrests because of the investigation.

Hiland said his "understanding is that there's an ongoing investigation, and as soon as we receive the review file, we'll begin the process of determining whether any felony charges are appropriate."
