Arkansas State Parks lead the way on accessibility with becoming RentABLE partnership

LITTLE ROCK, AR (March 19, 2024) – The Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism's State Parks Division has partnered with Becoming rentABLE to become the first state park system in the nation to certify facilities with Becoming RentABLE, a leader in accessible short-term rentals in the United States and Canada.

"Arkansas is blessed with the best state park network in the country, and everyone should have a chance to see what we have to offer. I'm proud our parks are partnering with Becoming rentABLE to improve accommodations for visitors with disabilities and open our outdoor spaces to all," said Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

This collaboration marks a significant step towards inclusive and accessible travel experiences for park visitors with mobility disabilities. By leading the nation in prioritizing accessibility and ensuring that visitors with disabilities can enjoy the experiences offered at its state parks, Arkansas aims to set a standard for the entire travel industry to follow.

"A key component of the mission of Arkansas State Parks is the enhancement of 'quality of life through exceptional outdoor experiences,'" said Shea Lewis, Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism and Director of Arkansas State Parks. "Achieving accessibility certifications through Becoming RentABLE will allow The Natural State to welcome many visitors who have never before had access to the types of first-rate outdoor experiences that our parks provide."

DeGray Lake Resort State Park was the first Arkansas State Park to receive Becoming rentABLE's mobility certification. The park currently has seven certified units. By prioritizing inclusivity and ensuring that all individuals have equal access to outdoor experiences, DeGray Lake Resort State Park is taking a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all visitors.

Launched in 2021, Becoming RentABLE is the first short-term listing platform focused exclusively on accessible rentals. The platform allows users to select mobility and cognitive accessible filters to identify listings that meet their specific needs.

Lorraine Woodward, CEO of Becoming rentABLE and Arkansas native, was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy as a child and has two adult boys with the same disease. She and her family have spent decades experiencing the frustration that a lack of accessibility creates firsthand.

"More than a quarter of U.S. adults have a disability," Woodward pointed out. "Individuals with a disability and their loved ones deserve the chance to travel and create memories. Yet, inaccessible properties often hold them back. Arkansas' leadership in prioritizing accessibility for all visitors across its state parks is truly commendable and is setting a fantastic example for the rest of the nation."

Arkansas State Parks is committed to identifying and promoting its existing accessible lodging options and has plans to certify even more short-term rental options in the future.
