SouthArk’s Evans moving into new role

After two seasons, South Arkansas College women’s head basketball coach Nate Evans has decided to step down from his position in order to shift toward an assistant’s role in the program.

Evans, who compiled a 5-35 record since taking over, cited both professional and personal reasons for the change.

“I am grateful for the opportunities I have had as head coach over the course of two seasons, and am incredibly proud of what we have been able to achieve and overcome together,” he said. “However, I feel that transitioning to the role of assistant coach will allow me to focus more on player development, which has always been a passion of mine, and allow me to be a present husband and father.

“This decision was entirely my own, and I appreciate the SouthArk athletic department and administration for supporting me in making it because I believe it is the best path forward for both me and the program.”

Evans began as an assistant coach for both the women’s and men’s programs in 2021-2022 before taking over as the interim head coach for the women’s team following the departure of former head coach Nate Davis in the summer of 2022. The interim tag was removed before the 2023-2024 season.

Now the search has opened for Evans’ replacement, with the coach’s full interest and support.

“I am committed to continuing the development of the program and our athletes in my new role, and I look forward to contributing to their growth and success in the years to come,” he said. “I want to express my gratitude to my wife Cecily, the players and parents, the Knighton family and all faculty and staff for their support throughout my tenure as head coach, and I am excited about what’s to come for SouthArk women’s basketball.”
