Quorum Court to appoint new Treasurer

The Union County Quorum Court will hold a specially-called meeting today to appoint a new Treasurer.

Lexie Kelley, who was appointed to the position in May following former Treasurer Debbie Ray's retirement, resigned on Wednesday, Jody Cunningham, administrative assistant to the county judge, said.

In the spring, Kelley ran against Cunningham in the Republican primaries for the Treasurer's position. Kelley had served in the treasurer's office as a deputy since 2016, including as chief deputy treasurer.

Cunningham won the primary election in May and Kelley was appointed to serve out the remainder of Ray's term two days after the election. Cunningham explained then that appointees aren't permitted to run for election immediately following their appointment, so she would have been barred from running for the office she'll take next January had she been appointed to fill out the remainder of Ray's term.

Kelley couldn't be reached for an interview by press-time Thursday.

Cunningham said that at today's meeting, Loftin is expected to recommend another deputy treasurer be appointed to fill out the remainder of Ray's term. Justices of the Peace must vote to approve the appointment.

The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the third-floor conference room at the Union County Courthouse.
