Brock leads in Smackover mayoral race

Contested races for mayorships and city council positions in several cities outside of El Dorado were decided in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

In Smackover, incumbent Mayor Bobby Neal, a Democrat, faced two challengers: Republican Donald Brock, currently a Justices of the Peace on the Union County Quorum Court; and Donald Hopkins, an independent.

With about half of all votes counted, Neal trailed Brock, while Hopkins had fallen behind both. At press-time, 77 votes had been counted for Neal; 124 for Brock; and seven for Hopkins.

Neal’s platform highlighted his desire to keep the city clean, increase public services and be available to Smackover residents. Brock ran on a platform of promoting economic growth, running the city professionally and being available to his constituents. Hopkins’ platform included hopes to keep prices on public services low and bring jobs to the city.
