Monthly support group for diabetic seniors to begin today

The UAMS South Arkansas Center on Aging is offering a monthly support group to seniors with diabetes starting today.

The monthly meetings are scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Center on Aging office, 106 W. Main, Suite 310.

The support group is also open to the family members of seniors with diabetes.

Aron Pagan, education coordinator for the local Center on Aging, said the goals of the meetings will be to provide education on diabetes, including understanding the disease process and management; to share healthy recipes; and to talk about the importance of reading food labels and making good food choices.

Other topics to be covered during the monthly meetings include meal planning, easy and safe exercise programs, stress management techniques, understanding blood sugar levels and readings and what resources are available to diabetic people.

For more information about the group, or to register, contact Assistant Education Director for the Center on Aging Jordan Turner at 870-881-8969 or [email protected].

Pagan said the Center on Aging also offers a class for diabetic people called "Sugar Shockers." More information about the UAMS South Arkansas Center on Aging, including a calendar of events, is available at uamscentersonaging.com.
