The American Legion's annual Veterans Day program is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11, on the Union County Courthouse steps.
Speaking in late October, American Legion Post 10 Commander Brian Burdine said speakers hadn't yet been lined up for this year's event. Nevertheless, he encouraged the community to come out to support local veterans.
"We want everybody to come out for Veterans Day - veterans and non-veterans, too," he said.
The program will be similar to previous years', starting with the customary bell-ringing, a tradition that began on Armistice Day -- Nov. 11, 1918 --, when the end of World War I was announced in communities around the world by ringing bells.
Following the bell-ringing, local residents will have the opportunity to hear from veterans from the area about their service and what the day means to them.
The ceremony typically concludes with the playing of taps.
Following the commemoration event, Burdine said lunch will be served at the American Legion Post 10, located on Highway 7 North, across from Country Village Sporting Goods.
