VFW Memorial Day event set for today

The El Dorado branch of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 2413, will hold a Memorial Day event today on the east side of the Union County Courthouse.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday set aside to remember military personnel who died while serving in the United States military.

Marilyn Pepper, VFW auxiliary president, said the central focus of the event will be its speakers.

“We usually have [the VFW] commander open the ceremony up. I will be doing the POW/MIA and children’s military table,” Pepper said.

VFW member Brian Williams will be the main speaker.

American Legion commander Brian Burdine said he will also say a few words during the ceremony.

The VFW generally organizes El Dorado’s Memorial Day events, while the American Legion heads up Veteran’s Day activities.

Following the ceremony, Pepper said, a light lunch will be served at the VFW headquarters located at 451 Industrial Road in El Dorado.
