Ham is an ever-popular holiday treat and late last week, El Dorado’s Brookshire’s stores made an effort to ensure those in need have an opportunity for an Easter meal.

Friday, El Dorado’s Brookshire’s stores teamed up to donated 154 hams to the Salvation Army.

John Tomanio, store director of the Brookshire’s on South West Avenue, said the relationship between the stores and the Salvation Army is not a new one.

“This is something that’s usually done around Christmas, but wasn’t this time because of COVID… The hams are a donation from Brookshire’s and Hormel,” Tomanio said.

Tomanio added that Brookshire’s also participates in an annual food drive with the Salvation Army, a project that has continued for “over 30 years.”

The boxes of ham were loaded by Brookshire’s management personnel.

Perdieu said that although the ham may not be used exclusively or specifically for Easter meals, it will be put to good use by his church.

“It may be used for Easter; we serve meals three times a day, so it will definitely be used to serve nutritious meals to the community,” Perdieu said.

El Dorado’s Salvation Army runs both an emergency food pantry and a daily cafeteria which serves meals three times per day.

Perdieu said in October that the church’s cafeteria has switched to a to-go format during the COVID-19 pandemic and has maintained that practice through holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
