The Murmil Education Center kicked off their career week last Monday with El Dorado Mayor Veronica Smith-Creer and City Council Members-Andre Rucks, Billy Blann, Mike Rice, Willie McGhee, and Paul Choate.

Murmil Education Center is an alternative learning environment serving approximately 170 students in the El Dorado School District.

The city officials visited classrooms, participated in a student led question and answer sessions and explained to attending students their roles and responsibilities to their city and gave an overview of their own career paths, Murmil Principal Kasey Porchia said.

Murmil Education Center’s Career Week continued March 9 through 11 with several city leaders, business owners, educators, and different organizations sharing their expertise with the Murmil students and staff, including the El Dorado Superintendent of Schools Jim Tucker.

Murmil consists of four unique programs: Murmil Heights Day Treatment program, the El Dorado HUB program, Murmil K-6 ALE (alternative learning environment) program and our Murmil 7-12 ALE program.

“Our programs’ aim is to reach our students where they are and to provide them the care they need in order to be successful all-around individuals,” Porchia said.

The Murmil Heights Day Treatment Program is an intensive, therapeutic program that focuses on the individual needs of each student. The class sizes are smaller and embody a more one-on-one approach to their learning. Mental health services are an integral part of the center’s day treatment program and extended to those families who desire these services, Porchia said.

The El Dorado HUB program is a blended educational program that is designed to meet the academic, mental, social and emotional needs of today’s students. The HUB is an actively learning, engaging and thriving environment that helps students be richly productive in many collaborative ways. The HUB program primarily serves students in 10th-12th grades. This program allows students to finish their coursework early, catch up on missing credits and earn credit for having a job.

“Murmil ALE programs provide a rich blended approach to learning,” Porchia said. “Our focus is to assist our students with success by providing hands-on activities, instilling real-world experience and scenarios, project-based learning, and various methods are used to address their needs and learning styles.”

“Murmil Education Center staff and students would like to extend a heart-felt appreciation and thanks to those individuals who came out to share a wealth of knowledge with our school. As a collective team, with the same goal in mind of success for all, we will win,” Porchia added.
