Election Commission holds ballot position drawing for school board races

The Union County Election Commission held a drawing during a public meeting on Thursday, March 4 at the county courthouse to determine the ballot position for each candidate in two Parkers Chapel School Board races with more than one candidate.

Election Commission Chair Cliff Wright flipped a coin to determine which candidate would draw for position first.

No candidate attended the drawing in person, so election commissioners Floyd Thomas and Mike Hayes stood in for the candidates to draw position numbers.

For the Parkers Chapel Position 4 race, incumbent Grace Palculict will occupy the first space on the ballot while challenger Kristina Madison will occupy the second. For the Parkers Chapel Position 5 race, incumbent Emily Carelock will occupy the first ballot space while challenger Lisa Murray will occupy the second.

The other candidates who filed to run in the May 18 school board elections — El Dorado Zone 1’s Wayne Gibson and Zone 6’s Vicky J. Dobson; Junction City Zone 4’s Eddie Bryan; and Smackover-Norphlet Zone 4’s Cliff Preston, who filed as a write-in candidate — will run unopposed and thus did not require a ballot position drawing.

Wright said that Parkers Chapel First Baptist Church will serve as the polling place for the Parkers Chapel School Board races.

“The school district has a contract with Parkers Chapel First Baptist Church for that to be their polling place,” Wright said.

Precise details on the early voting process and the overall process for the unopposed races was not yet available Thursday.

Early voting for the school board elections is set to begin on May 11 and end on May 17, and will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
