One new local COVID case reported

Local seven-day positivity rate high after relatively few tests

There was one new COVID-19 case reported Saturday in Union County, bringing the cumulative total of cases identified locally to 3,662, according to the Arkansas Department of Health.

The new case was a confirmed case, determined by positive PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests, of which 2,819 have been identified locally. The number of probable cases, determined by positive antigen (rapid) tests, stayed steady at 843.

Since last Sunday, 50 COVID-19 cases have been identified in the county.

Active cases stayed steady Saturday at 53; they represented 1.4% of all the cases identified locally and included 40 confirmed cases and 13 probable cases. The number of active cases in the county has fluctuated throughout the week, from a high of 60 last Sunday to a low of 45 recorded Friday.

There were 3,507 Union County residents considered recovered from the virus Saturday, up one from Friday. Since last Sunday, 64 local residents have met the criteria for recovery.

For the second week in a row, the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement did not report city- and school district-level COVID data, citing the low number of tests performed.

No new local deaths caused by COVID-19 were reported Saturday. A total of 102 Union County residents have died as a result of the virus, including two last Sunday.

There were 85 people hospitalized Sunday in the Southwest hospital region of the state, where Union County is located, including 31 in intensive care units and 10 on ventilator support.

The ADH reported 23 new negative test results returned from Union County Saturday. Since last Sunday, 302 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, so the seven day rolling average positivity rate for the county was 16.6% as of Saturday. The United States Centers for Disease Control recommends a seven-day positivity rate of under 10%.

In total, 29,495 COVID-19 test results have returned from the county, including 25,833 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 12.4%.

Arkansas added 557 new COVID-19 cases Saturday to its cumulative total, which reached 319,195. The cases in the state included 252,026 confirmed cases, up 315 from Friday, and 67,169 probable cases, up 242 from Friday.

Since last Sunday, 3,966 COVID-19 cases have been identified in Arkansas.

The number of active cases rose Saturday by four cases to reach 4,483; they represented 1.4% of all the cases identified in the state and included 2,931 confirmed cases and 1,552 probable cases. Active cases have dropped on all but two days this week.

There were 309,268 Arkansans considered recovered from the virus Saturday, up 543 from Friday. Since last Sunday, 4,808 Arkansans have met the criteria for recovery.

The deaths of 10 Arkansans that resulted from COVID-19 were reported Saturday, bringing the state’s death toll to 5,417, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.7%. A total of 60 Arkansans have died since last Sunday as a result of COVID infections.

There were 475 Arkansans hospitalized Saturday due to the virus, including 172 in ICUs and 97 on ventilator support.

The ADH reported 7,799 new COVID-19 test results returned Saturday. Since last Sunday, 57,295 results have returned to the ADH, making the seven day rolling average positivity rate for the state 6.9%.

As of Saturday, 258,846 test results had returned to the ADH so far this month. Since the state began testing for the virus, 3,087,865 results have returned to the ADH, including 2,757,021 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 10.3%.

In Arkansas, 629,022 doses of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines had been administered by Saturday afternoon. The state has been allocated 989,580 doses, according to the ADH.

Johns Hopkins University reported 28,540,400 COVID-19 cases in the United States on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. Data wasn’t available then on the number of active cases among U.S. residents or the number of recoveries in the country. There had been 511,787 deaths attributable to the virus recorded in the U.S. by Saturday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 1.8%.

Johns Hopkins reported 113,651,359 COVID-19 cases worldwide Saturday afternoon. There were 64,136,289 people considered recovered from the virus then, leaving 46,992,965 cases — 41.3% — active around the world. There had been 2,522,105 deaths attributable to the virus reported by Saturday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.2%.

Since last Sunday, approximately 425,830 COVID-19 cases have been identified in the U.S. and about 13,403 U.S. residents’ deaths resulting from COVID have been reported. Worldwide, about 2,388,838 cases were been identified between last Sunday and this Saturday, along with approximately 58,232 deaths.
