One new local COVID case reported, recoveries surpass 3,500

Only one new COVID-19 case was reported in Union County Thursday. The cumulative total of cases identified locally grew to 3,648 as a result of its addition.

The newly identified case was a probable case, of which 844 have been identified locally and which are determined by positive antigen (rapid) tests. A total of 2,804 confirmed cases, determined by positive PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests, have been identified in Union County.

Active cases fell below 50 again Thursday, dropping by eight to reach 45; they represented 1.2% of all the cases identified locally and included 30 confirmed cases and 15 probable cases. The number of Union County residents considered recovered from the virus grew by nine to reach 3,501 Thursday.

No new local deaths attributable to the virus were reported on Thursday. A total of 102 deaths caused by COVID-19 have been recorded in Union County. There were 87 people hospitalized Thursday in the Southwest hospital region of the state, where Union County is located, including 30 in intensive care units and 13 on ventilator support.

The ADH reported 104 new negative test results returned from Union County Thursday. In all, 29,440 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 25,792 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 12.4%.

According to Arkansas COVID, a University of Arkansas School of Journalism and Strategic Media program that has been tracking COVID-19 data in the state, as of Feb. 24, 10.2% of Union County’s residents have received their first dose of a COVID vaccine, and 3.9% have received their second dose.

There were 726 new COVID-19 cases reported statewide Thursday, bringing the cumulative total of cases identified in Arkansas to 318,122. The cases in the state Thursday included 251,299 confirmed cases, up 574 from Wednesday, and 66,823 probable cases, up 152 from Wednesday.

The number of active cases in the state rose Thursday for the first time in more than a week. Active cases grew by 44 to reach 4,720; they represented 1.5% of all the cases identified in Arkansas and included 3,094 confirmed cases and 1,626 probable cases. There were 307,978 Arkansans considered recovered from the virus Thursday, up 672 from Wednesday.

The deaths of 10 Arkansans that resulted from COVID-19 were reported Thursday, bringing the state’s death toll to 5,397, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.7%. There were 522 Arkansans hospitalized Thursday due to the virus, including 204 in ICUs and 108 on ventilator support.

Since the state began testing for the virus, 3,069,404 results have returned to the ADH, including 2,739,714 negatives, indicating an overall positivity rate for the state of 10.4%.

At 5 p.m. Thursday, Johns Hopkins University reported 28,396,896 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Data wasn’t available then on the number of U.S. residents considered recovered from the virus or the number of active cases in the country. There had been 507,803 deaths caused by the virus reported in the U.S. by Thursday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 1.8%.

Johns Hopkins reported 112,856,868 COVID-19 cases worldwide Thursday afternoon. There were 63,669,784 people considered recovered from the virus then, leaving 46,683,349 cases — 41.4% — active around the world. There had been 2,503,735 deaths attributable to the virus reported by Thursday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 2.2%.
