UCAPS Race for the Rescues benefit Saturday

Downtown El Dorado will face a canine invasion Saturday morning as the Union County Animal Protection Society holds its Race for the Rescues 5K and benefit.

The centerpiece of the benefit, the 5K walk, starts at 8 a.m.

There will also be a simultaneous one mile walk for those who wish to walk with their leashed pet.

UCAPS board member Kim Phillips said online sign-ups closed this week but runners can still sign up Saturday morning before the race begins.

Race day sign-up fees will be $30, and the starting location is 201 North Jackson Street in El Dorado.

Runners should arrive between 7 to 7:45 a.m. to receive the packet containing their racing number and other items. Participants will also receive a t-shirt.

The day’s other activities will shine the spotlight on some of El Dorado’s pets.

First, starting at 10 a.m., will be the “Wiener Doggy Dash,” a series of races between dachshunds. There are a variety of categories for this race dependent on the dachshund’s age.

The sign up fee for this activity is $15.

Closing the day’s activities will be “Rescued on the Runway,” a pet fashion show, set to begin at 11 a.m.

Trophies will be given to first, second and third place winners and the sign up fee is $15.

Kernal Mustard’s Hot Dog Stand will also be on hand from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and, Phillips said, will donate all tip money at the end of the day to UCAPS.

Information about the benefit released by UCAPS states that all proceeds will “help feed, medicate, and find homes for the abused and abandoned animals in Union County.”

Masks will be required at all times except when participating in the race.
