Smackover cancels football game against Hampton due to virus

Smackover’s scheduled football game at Hampton for Friday night has been canceled due to members of the varsity program being exposed to the coronavirus.

The Bucks will resume play on Sept. 25 against Lake Village, which not only is their homecoming game, but also their first conference game.

A statement on the situation was posted to the Buckaroo Blog.

“Due to an abundance of caution because of COVID-19 exposure in the varsity football program, the Smackover-Norphlet School District has canceled its varsity football game for this Friday.

“The district expects for varsity football games to resume the week of homecoming.”

Smackover coach David Osborn said Wednesday that he is looking at various practice plans for his team, who opened their season last week by falling to Junction City.

Junior high games will go on as scheduled with the Bucks hosting Hampton on Thursday and Rison on Sept. 17.

Those games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Seventh-grade games will be played prior to the junior high games with a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.

Fans interested in attending those games can contact Smackover Middle School or Smackover High School until 2 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday for tickets.
