City council to convene for packed agenda today

Council, MAD seek entertainment district

The El Dorado City Council will tend to a packed agenda during a regular meeting at 5:30 today in the Council Chamber of City Hall.

Main Street El Dorado and the Murphy Arts District are expected to propose an ordinance that, if approved, would formally establish an entertainment district in the city’s downtown.

It is not clear if the groups will seek a permanent or temporary entertainment district.

Council members will also consider an amendment to city ordinance 1376, which prohibits the storage of vehicles on city streets and rights-of-way.

Also on the agenda is an update of the city’s summer jobs program, which was created in June for area youth who are at least 17 years old.

Council members appropriated $85,000 from the city’s reserve coffers to hire 20 young people to clear litter and overgrown vegetation from city rights-of-way.

The positions are part-time and employees work three days per week.

During the council’s last regular meeting on July 2, Council Member Billy Blann requested a progress report, saying that he would like to hear how the seasonal program is working out in case he is asked to support it again.

Johnathan Estes, manager of South Arkansas Regional Airport at Goodwin Field, will present an economic impact study that includes SARA and the Downtown Airport.

Estes said the Arkansas Department of Aeronautics commissioned the study for each of the 90 airports around the state. The project was covered by a federal grant.

“We talked about projects we’ve done in the past and projects we have planned for the future and how they impact the airport and the impact of aviation on the state,” Estes explained.

Council members will consider a recommendation a to reappoint David Hurst to the El Dorado Parks and Playgrounds Commission.

Breay Clark, an El Dorado High School track and field standout, will be recognized as the recipient of the 2018 - 2019 Gatorade Arkansas Girls Track Field Athlete of the Year Award.

The national award distinguishes Clark as the best girls track and field athlete in the state and emphasizes high academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track.
