Lady Trojans win Jr. County Tournament

PARKERS CHAPEL – Parkers Chapel hit two free throws in the final 26 seconds Saturday and beat Hampton 28-26 in the girls championship game of the Union County Jr. Tournament.

Kallie Martin hit the first of two free throws to break a 26-26 tie with 26 seconds remaining. Ashton Herrin added a free throw with 1.7 seconds on the clock.

“I was very proud of how hard my girls fought,” said PC coach Justin Welch. “It was a perfect example of how sheer heart and determination can lift a team. These girls put everything into each and every game. When the game is over, they have very little left in their tanks. As a coach, that's exactly what you need from a team. I'm happy that all of their hard work in the gym paid off for them and they were able to get that championship trophy.”

Martin led the Lady Trojans with nine points while Madison Sullivan chipped in with seven.

“For us, winning the Union County Tournament means something and it's special to do that with this group of girls,” said Welch. “There's a lot of history in this tournament and many of my players have parents that played in this tournament when they were in junior high so I know that they were proud of them, too.”
