MONTICELLO - For the sixth time in seven years, Junction City is headed to the state semifinals.

Terrell Gibson found Jalen Davis for a layup with 2.9 seconds left, as the Dragons stunned Manila 53-52 in the quarterfinals of the 3A State Tournament Thursday night.

Junction City (19-12), the No. 3 seed from the 4-3A, will face the winner of today's quarterfinal showdown between Charleston and McGehee.

The ending is something that won't be soon forgotten.

With 20 seconds left, Gibson buried a 3-pointer to give Junction City lead a one-point lead.

However, Joel Burrow scored with 13 seconds left to give the Lions the lead back.

But it would be Gibson and Davis who would have the final say on matters with Davis' aforementioned basket proving to be the game-winner.

"The kids did an unbelievable job with their effort and they dictated the tempo," said Junction City coach Kendall Hutcheson. "This win is all about their effort, and I'm extremely proud of them."

It looked like the Lions were going to cruise early, taking a 16-8 lead after one period of play, and a 27-13 lead at intermission.

But after trailing by as many as 17 points in the first half, the Dragons roared back to cut the Lions' lead to 36-34 after three periods of play before the dramatic ending pushed the Dragons into the semifinals.

Jerrodney Tubbs had 14 points to lead the Dragons, while Hishmma Taylor chipped in with 12 points.

Davis had nine points and Gibson finished with seven points.

Burrow had 21 points and Bradey Woodall had 19 points for Manila.
