It is with great sadness the family of Hazel C. Dettenheim Wood announces her passing at age 96 years. Her happy, giving spirit and love for her family and friends will live on in each of us. Hazel was predeceased by her husband Aaron E. Wood and granddaughter, Caroline Victoria Coldicutt. She leaves three children: Richard L. Wood (Linda), Winthrop, AR; Danny L. Wood (Virginia), Junction City, AR; and Elizabeth Wood Coldicutt (Thomas), Rancho Mirage, CA; five grandsons: Adam Wood (Jennifer), Troup,TX; Christopher Greenwood, Rancho Mirage, CA; David Wood (Patricia), Paris, TX; Geoffrey Greenwood (Adrienne), Chula Vista, CA; and Jason Wood, Junction City, AR; six great-grandchildren: Allison, Andrew and Rachel Wood, Paris, TX; Dallas and Colton Wood, Troup, TX; and Elizabeth Greenwood, Lodi, CA; and five step-grandchildren. Hazel was a long-time resident of Spearsville, LA. Throughout her life, she gave of her time and energy toward helping others, whether it was working as an assistant teacher, supporting the war effort in the United States by volunteering with the WCA or later working with Boeing during WWII as a riveter on airplanes in Memphis, TN. She was married to Aaron E. Wood on March 17, 1944. Hazel was a stay-at-home wife and mom, dedicating her life to raising their three children, and later devoting nearly 20 years as caretaker for her mother, Lois Henrietta Dettenheim.

Hazel loved to garden and spent many hours tending to her vegetable and flower gardens each year. Her gardens were a place of solace and comfort, and she took pride in sharing with family and friends her vegetables and fruits which she froze, canned and prepared home-made jellies annually. She was always busy even when she was relaxing, producing many home-made quilts, crocheted items and participating in a quilting club with friends sharing many of her quilting patterns and designs. Her quilts were shown in numerous quilting shows in CA winning “honorable mention” in design and craftsmanship.

Hazel will be fondly remembered for her strength of character, determination and particularly her wit. Visitation was held at Bailey Funeral Home in Junction City on June 23, 2016, 5 to 7 p.m. Graveside service was held at 9 a.m. on June 24, 2016 at Beech Grove Cemetery, Spearsville, LA. Special thanks to her support caretaker, Clara Smith, who was especially attentive to her needs during the past five years as well as to the wonderful nursing staff at Oak Ridge Nursing Home. Also special thanks go to Bernice and Sondra at Life Touch Hospice.

Hazel will be greatly missed by her loving family and all who were fortunate to know her.
