No major injuries in highway collision

A collision involving an Arkansas Highway Department dump truck and an tractor-trailer on U.S. Route 167 South near Faircrest caused multiple lane closures on Monday afternoon.

Chief Bill Hickman of the Union County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m.

The flow of traffic was still obstructed at least an hour after the incident occurred. Arkansas State Police, with the help of UCSO deputies, directed traffic through the scene while workers removed the spilled lumber and debris from the highway.

Officials at the scene said there were no major injuries reported at that time.

“The truck came up behind the dump truck and hit it in the rear end,” Hickman said. “There was a worker in the back of the dump truck who saw the 18 wheeler coming and had to jump out into the ditch.”

The driver of the tractor-trailer, an owner-operator for J&D Trucking of Beaumont, Texas, stated that he did not see the dump truck parked on the side of the road or any caution signs.

The driver, who would not identify himself at the time of this report, was carrying a load of lumber, which spilled onto the highway during the crash.

Highway Department workers were present when the crash occurred.

No official report was available from law enforcement at the time of this report.
