Fordyce removed from regional tourney

In a news release on Wednesday, the Arkansas Activities Association stated: “The Fordyce girls basketball team has been removed from the 2A South Regional Tournament after inadvertently using an ineligible player. Due to the timing, Spring Hill will advance in the tournament while all other first round matchups will be played as previously scheduled. Fordyce will forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated this season.”

Parkers Chapel had a pair of losses to Fordyce in less than a week, falling 47-45 on Feb.9 and 42-40 in the semifinals of the 2A 8 District Tournament. The two forfeits change the Lady Trojans’ record from 21-7 to 23-5 as they head into the 2A South Regional Tournament this week at Acorn.

Losing to Fordyce bumped the regular-season champion PC down to a No. 3 seed. The Lady Trojans will play No. 2 seed Horatio (17-9) on Thursday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the 2A State Tournament.

Spring Hill, which finished sixth in its conference during the regular season, will take a bye into the state tournament with an 11-18 record.

PC coach Justin Welch, when reached for comment on Wednesday, declined, saying, “I probably don’t need to at this moment.”
