SMACKOVER - Smackover advanced in the girls’ bracket of the 3A 8 District Tournament on Monday after beating Harmony Grove 44-31. The Lady Bucks improved to 5-20 and will play Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Drew Central.

The Buckaroos fell to DeWitt 60-50 in the boys’ bracket to end their season.

The Lady Bucks got off to a strong start, building a quick 9-2 advantage on Abby Brewer’s 3-pointer with 4:10 left in the first quarter. Smackover led 11-3 after one quarter and 21-11 at the half.

Harmony Grove (3-20) cut the margin to 26-19 going into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Hornets turned up the defensive pressure and pulled to within 28-24 with 5:45 left in the game. But Smackover stood firm as freshman Laziyria Buggs scored in the lane before Brewer drove for a bucket.

Harmony Grove never got closer than six points the rest of the way.

Gretchen Goodwin scored seven of her 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Bucks held on for the win. Goodwin, who hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch, finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Brewer scored 13 points with Buggs adding nine. Freshman LaTrinity Grant had five points and 10 rebounds.

“We won the battle of the boards by out-rebounding them tonight and outscored them in the paint,” said Smackover coach Jon Piggot. “We followed the game plan to a T. Proud of the girls.”

Eliza Taylor led Harmony Grove with 10.

In the boys’ game, Smackover led 12-7 before DeWitt went on an 8-0 spurt in the second quarter. The Bucks answered as MyKel Fields hit four consecutive free throws for an 18-17 lead with 2:50 left in the second. 

The Dragons responded with back-to-back three-point plays by Lamarion Jenkins and Keith Xavier Cox and built a 25-20 lead at the intermission. The margin was 42-35 going into the fourth.

The Bucks pulled as close as 46-40 with 6:34 remaining. But DeWitt went on a 6-2 spurt, including a steal and bucket by Jenkins and gradually pulled away. Isaiah Gaston hit four 3-pointers in the second half, including two in the final three minutes to keep Smackover within shouting distance. 

Gaston and Fields led Smackover (10-17) with 18 points apiece.

DeWitt (9-15) was paced by Braylon Brown with 20 and Cox with 18.
