Smackover upends Lady Dragons

SMACKOVER - Freshman pitcher Ava Walker twirled a two-hit shutout Monday to hurl Smackover to a 10-0 win over Junction City in non-conference action. The Lady Bucks improved to 6-3 while the Lady Dragons fell to 8-3.

Walker pitched five innings, allowing two hits and no walks with 10 strikeouts.

“Ava pitched a tremendous game. She pitched a great game,” said Smackover coach Dennis Steele. “She was on top of it and pitched a great game. She was in command and we made some nice plays defensively. Taylor Darden (shortstop) made a great diving catch over her shoulder. We had my catcher hurt. (Emily) Camacho caught and did a great job at catcher.

“We got some timely hits and they threw the ball around and we took advantage of it.”

The Lady Bucks scored 10 runs on just two hits. Junction City hit five batters and walked six.

Smackover scored three in the second. Alyssa Hubbard was hit by a pitch. Abby Brewer walked and, with two outs, Gretchen Goodwin walked, Brewer scored on a wild pitch and Taylor Darden drove in two runs with a single.

The Lady Bucks scored six in the third on no hits with four hit batters and two walks. Camacho was hit by a pitch, stole two bases and scored on a passed ball. 

Jess Thurman started in the circle for the Lady Dragons, surrendering eight runs on five walks and four hit batters in 2 ⅓ innings. Karla Castillo pitched 1 ⅔ innings allowing one walk with one hit batter.

Smackover travels to Drew Central on Thursday. The Lady Dragons play El Dorado on Thursday.

Parkers Chapel 3

HAMPTON - The Lady Trojans gave up 15 walks Monday in a non-conference loss at Hampton. The Lady Trojans fell to 2-4 on the season while the Lady Bulldogs improved to 6-3.

Parkers Chapel had two of its three hits in the first inning when it scored all of its runs. Krista Rivers was hit by a pitch. Makenzie Morgan singled. Rivers eventually scored on a passed ball. After Addalyn Adams walked, Carlee Cater singled to center with two runs scoring on an error in the outfield.

Hampton scored five runs in the second inning and added three in the fourth and five in the fifth, ending the game on the run rule. The Lady Bulldogs drew five walks in the second with Zoie Partain stroking a two-run double. Emma Haynes had a RBI single in the fourth and Morgan Ogden drove in a run with a double in the fifth.

Hampton’s Morgan Williams allowed three runs on three hits in five innings with four walks and six strikeouts.
