County sells off old vehicles

The Union County Quorum Court last week agreed to sell four 2008 Ford F-150 trucks to Calhoun County.

During their regular meeting on April 20, Justices of the Peace considered an ordinance calling for the sale of the vehicles for a total of $16,000. Three of the vehicles were to be sold for $5,000, and one for $1,000.

County Judge Mike Loftin explained that the trucks were among the oldest in the county's fleet.

"They're 15 years old. One of them has been wrecked and has no engine; that's the $1,000 one," he said.

Calhoun County "is in dire need of some trucks," Loftin said, while Union County recently purchased two new trucks.

"Calhoun County wrecked on that they have and have one that's about to lose an engine up there," he said.

District 3 JP Greg Harrison asked whether Union County had enough vehicles to cover all of its needs.

"We've got a bunch of vehicles. We need to thin them out a little bit," Loftin answered.

Loftin said a dealer valued the trucks, and Calhoun County Judge Floyd Nutt agreed to purchase all four and use the engine-less vehicle for salvage parts.

JPs voted unanimously to approve the sale.
