MUSA promoting breast cancer awareness with 'Fueling the Cure' campaign

Gift cards to be awarded to 400 women who get breast screenings

Murphy USA is promoting breast cancer awareness in October with its annual "Fueling the Cure" campaign.

MUSA will be offering $50 gift cards to the first 400 women who receive their screening mammogram during the month of October at Medical Center of South Arkansas.

"We hope that the Fueling the Cure campaign will remind women to schedule their annual mammogram and that it will cover expenses for those that may be traveling to receive their mammogram," said Courtney Kelley, MUSA philanthropy and community relations director.

Women can schedule their mammograms for October, and the first 400 who are screened will receive a card at their appointment which they can present at the MUSA corporate office, 200 E. Peach St., to redeem their gift card, explained Alex Bennett in MUSA's community relations, philanthropy and events department.

Screening mammograms are performed for women who have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer and are considered at average risk for breast cancer. Women ages 35 to 39 should receive one baseline screening mammogram and women 40 years of age or older should receive screening mammograms annually.

Different guidelines apply to women that are at higher risk.

Most women with private, employer based, Medicaid and Medicare insurances have coverage for breast cancer screening services and will have no out-of-pocket costs.

Breast cancer typically has no symptoms when the growth is small and most easily treated, which is why screenings are important for early detection. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 8 women, or 13%, will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 39 women -- 3% -- will die from breast cancer.

"Murphy USA is proud to be able to support and encourage women in our community to receive screening mammograms because we know that early detection saves lives," Kelley said.
