South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra holiday show set for Dec. 3

by Tia Lyons | November 18, 2022 at 12:00 a.m.

The South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will present its holiday show, "Rejoice!", at 7 p.m. Dec. 3 at the El Dorado Municipal Auditorium.

The symphony is encouraging families to bring their children and "let the holiday and Christmas charm come alive" as it performs holiday standards and new favorites.

"We're going to have Santa come to visit and ... it's going to be a lot of fun," said Sara Coffman, SASO executive director.

The symphony will pull plenty of standard holiday tunes from its repertoire, including "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing", "Silent Night", "The Nutcracker", "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "Baby, it's Cold Outside", and more.

To add a little a twist to the holiday music and magic of the season, Coffman said the symphony will be joined by a few guests, including choirs from six area high schools -- El Dorado, Norphlet, Camden-Fairview, Magnolia, Emerson and Taylor.

Singers Sophia Meyer and Keron Jackson will be featured during several musical selections throughout the evening.

Meyer is a 2018 graduate of El Dorado High School who has been actively involved in the local performing arts community for several years, including serving as an intern for the South Arkansas Arts Center during her junior year at EHS.

Meyer has sung at many community events and appeared on stage in local productions.

Meyer went on to study music education at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, immersing herself in the vibrant music and cultural arts scene there.

Jackson is a musician, actor, evangelist and motivational speaker who is well known in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and other venues around the country for his "powerhouse voice" and distinctive bass tone.

He has performed and appeared in opera houses, national singing competitions, conventions, theaters, schools and churches and more;

In the 2000s, Jackson debuted, reportedly to rave reviews, with the Dallas Opera House in a production of the venerable George Gershwin opera, "Porgy and Bess."

He has also taken the stage at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York.

"Rejoice!" will include gingerbread cookies and candy canes for the audience.

Tickets are on sale for $25 and may be purchased online at www.southarkansassymphony.com or by calling 870-310-2244.

SASO is in its 66th season, which began in September. Kermit Poling has served as musical director for nearly 30 years.
