Quorum Court to review Tax Back resolution today

The monthly meeting of the Union County Quorum Court is scheduled for this morning, and only one resolution is set to be up for consideration today.

Justices of the Peace will review a resolution that would support Systems Fab & Machine Inc.'s participation in the state's Tax Back program.

According to the Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC), the Tax Back program "provides sales and use tax refunds on the purchase of building materials and taxable machinery and equipment to qualified businesses" that have invested in the community the company is based in through job creation.

The state requires that local governments endorse businesses' participation in the program.

System's Fab & Machine Inc. is a steel fabrication company that operates as part of The Systems Group. The company recently announced plans to expand their primary fabrication and machine shop in El Dorado by purchasing 47 acres of land next to their current facility at 151 Pickering Dr.

According to a press release from the company, 60 new workers will be hired at the expanded facility, including welders, pipefitters and fabricators.

"This is an exciting time in the steel industry," Lee Morgan, president and owner of Systems, said in the release. "America is going through a resurgence of bringing manufacturing jobs back to the USA, and our business is benefiting from that."

The company's Chief Executive Officer Charles Hays Jr.'s father founded the Systems Contracting Corporation, Systems Spray-Cool Equipment Company and American Steel (which Systems Fab & Machine Inc. was formerly known as).

"We proudly put 'Made in the USA' in big letters on our equipment and our customers love it," Hays Jr. said in the expansion announcement release. "We are committed to growing in El Dorado."

According to the release, the AEDC has already approved the company's participation in the program.

JPs earlier this year approved a resolution backing Resolute Forest Products's participation in the program, and previously have passed resolutions supporting Continental Carbonics Products, Inc., Clean Harbors and Clean Harbors Environmental Products, Inc.'s participation in the program.

District 3 JP Greg Harrison is also slated to provide an update on the El Dorado-Union County Recreation Complex's financials at today's meeting.

The Quorum Court meets at 10 a.m. in the third-floor conference room at the Union County Courthouse on the third Thursday of each month.
