Downtown parking lot, Hillsboro expansion on Council agenda

El Dorado City Council members are expected to hear updates on several issues and projects when they convene for a regular meeting at 5 p.m. today in the Council Chamber of City Hall.

One item revolves around ongoing discussions pertaining to a public parking lot that was sold in a state land auction in late April due to delinquent property tax payments.

During the council's monthly meeting in May, Mayor Veronica Smith-Creer laid out several points to address and clear up rumors and misinformation that swirled around the matter.

After a lengthy discussion that included several questions, council members agreed that they needed to track down the deed/title to determine the rightful owner of the lot, which is located in the area of West Oak, West Elm and Cleveland streets across from City Hall and behind First Baptist Church on Main Street.

The city had long been thought to own the lot. The lot lies on the east side of an adjacent lot that used to be home to a branch of a local bank.

Also on the council's agenda are updates on the upcoming Hillsboro/U.S. 82-widening and expansion project and a project to replace and modernize deteriorating and faulty lighting, audio and electrical systems at the El Dorado Municipal Auditorium.

A task force, which is headed by Council Member Paul Choate, is coordinating the auditorium project to come up with a scope of work and costs.

The council is also expected to hear a Finance Committee report. The committee last met May 17.
