The Murphy Arts District announced Monday that storied rock band ZZ Top is set to perform at the MAD Amphitheatre on September 21. Ticket sales will kick off Friday at 10 a.m., according to MAD.
ZZ Top originated in Houston, Texas with founding members Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill, and maintained prominence and heavy airplay particularly throughout the 1970s and 80s.
Vocalist and bassist Hill, who along with Gibbons showcased the band’s signature beard, sunglasses and hat style, died in 2021 and was replaced by Elwood Francis. The band had maintained the same lineup for 51 years at the time of Hill’s death.
Gibbons told Variety shortly after Hill’s death that Hill gave a “direct directive” that Francis, a guitar tech for three decades for the band, act as his replacement while he dealt with health issues.
ZZ Top is set to release a new album, “RAW,” on July 22, and will kick off their Raw Whisky Tour the same day.
This stop will not be the band’s first trip to El Dorado; in 2017, ZZ Top was part of an extensive lineup that helped mark the opening of the Murphy Arts District during MusicFest XXX.
“It’s been nearly five years since ZZ Top played the MAD Amphitheater and we are excited to welcome them back to El Dorado! We had a blast watching them during our grand opening and hope that many of those attendees will return for another night of fantastic music,” said Pam Griffin, MAD President and CEO, in a press release about the concert.
Tickets will be available Friday on eldomad.com or at the box office outside First Financial Music Hall.
