Bond set at $3K for former guidance counselor

Bond was set at $3,000 during a first appearance hearing Friday for a former school guidance counselor who is facing several misdemeanor charges that resulted from a months-long investigation.

Megan B. Wilson, 38, who was a counselor at Barton Junior High School, was arrested Thursday on an arrest warrant for knowingly selling alcohol to a minor, first-degree; providing minors with tobacco products; contributing to the delinquency of a minor; and endangering the welfare of a minor, second-degree.

Wilson was held overnight in the Union County jail and she made her first appearance Friday in 35th Judicial District Court.

She was issued a $3,000 bond cash or corporate surety bond. Her trial date was set for Jan. 4.

It was unclear Friday if Wilson plans to hire an attorney.

The El Dorado Police Department and the El Dorado School District launched an investigation last summer after the Arkansas Child Abuse Hotline, who was acting on a tip, notified the EPD about allegations of inappropriate conduct by Wilson.

"We got in touch with the school district, which led to them placing (her) on administrative leave," said Capt. Scott Harwell of the EPD's Criminal Investigative Division.

In a statement Thursday, the ESD said that upon learning about the potential misconduct, district officials immediately placed Wilson on administrative leave and cooperated with the EPD in the investigation.

Wilson did not return to work and she was subsequently terminated from her position with the school district. She had worked in the ESD for seven years.

The ESD declined to release further details about the case and stressed that student "health, safety and welfare" is a priority for the district.

Harwell said the investigation is ongoing.
