MARVELL – For the first time since 2010, Strong is 3-0.
LaQuincy Shelton and Byron Maze each ran and threw for a touchdown apiece, as the Bulldogs topped Marvell 30-12 in an 8-Man South tilt Friday night.
The game was tied at 6-all at halftime, but the Bulldogs (3-0, 2-0) scored the lone points in the third quarter to take a 14-6 lead into the final period before pulling away.
Shelton, who threw for 135 yards with an interception, fired a 24-yard strike to Maze while adding a 1-yard touchdown run and a successful 2-point conversion.
Maze’s touchdown pass was a 35-yard strike to Shelton, and the duo combined for 170 yards through the air.
Maze, who led the Bulldogs with 67 yards rushing on just five carries, also scored on a 1-yard run while adding two successful 2-point conversions.
A senior, Maze had a hand in six of the Bulldogs’ seven completions, catching five passes for 122 yards along with his aforementioned touchdown pass to Shelton.
Treveon Daniels added 58 yards on six carries for the Bulldogs.
Shelton and Maze also shined defensively for the Bulldogs.
Shelton had 10 1/2 solo tackles while assisting on two others for Strong. He had 3 1/2 tackles for a loss, including half a sack and broke up one pass.
Maze had 7 1/2 solo stops while assisting on three others. He had three tackles for a loss, 1 1/2 sacks and he forced a fumble.
Jayme Correa added 6 1/2 solo tackles and assisted on three others. He recovered a fumble and had half a sack and half a tackle for a loss. Kanye Hawkins had seven tackles, including four solo stops, and Daniels forced a fumble for Strong.
After topping the Mustangs (1-3, 0-3) in their first-ever meeting, the Bulldogs return home to face Brinkley in their final non-conference game next week.
