Wildcats, Lady Cats win conference golf crowns

GLENWOOD - El Dorado Golf teams claim both boys and girls 5A South conference championships at Glenwood on Tuesday. The tournament was halted by a two-hour weather delay after getting four holes in. It resumed play in the rain after the threat of lightning passed.

The Wildcats won the boys' title by twp strokes over Lakeside 307 - 309.

Jon Brooks Elia won the individual title with 69, Keaton Michael followed with 76, Miller Wallace 79, Aaron Ezell 83, and Austin Jobe 87. Lake Hamilton placed third to qualify for state with a team score of 366.

El Dorado's girls rolled to a 50-stroke margin over second place Lakeside 245-295. Aubrey Marx finished as medalist runner up after losing a sudden death playoff against Sheridan's Emma Hester. Marx and Hester finished the competitive round at 76. Hope Walthall carded an 83, Lani Hammock 85 and Alexa Hulsey 88.

Sheridan was the third place team at 326 for the last spot for state.

"We had gotten off the a strong start before the rain delay hit about 3 to 4 holes into the tournament," said El Dorado coach Chris Ezell. "We gave away a few shots immediately coming out of the 2-hour delay but our kids managed to keep things under control and finished strong. There is something about our conference tournaments here lately that rain seems to be a factor. After last year's experience in the hurricane rains, our kids were able to take it in stride. We are looking forward to the upcoming state tournaments over these next two weeks."

El Dorado had six golfers earn 5A South All Conference honors in Elia, Michael, Wallace for the boys and Marx, Walthall and Hammock for the girls.

The girls team returns to Glenwood next week for the 5A Girls state tournament. The boys state tournament is Tuesday October 5th at Mystic Creek.
