HAMPTON – A late stand by Smackover’s defense proved to be the difference, as the Bucks held on for a 28-20 win over Hampton Friday night in their final non-conference game.
The Bucks were driving toward the Hampton red zone in the final minutes of the game, but turned the ball over.
However, the Bucks’ defense forced Hampton to go four-and-out, and Smackover was able to run out the clock.
Offensively, Tyler Sexton threw for 177 yards, all of which came in the second half for the Bucks, who had 358 yards of total offense in win.
D’Kylan Hildreth scored a pair of touchdowns for the Bucks, accounting for 160 yards rushing and receiving with 149 of those yards coming in the latter category.
Daylon Curley led the Bucks’ rushing attack with 96 yards on seven carries, while Jarius Burgie finished 64 yards on 19 carries in the win.
The Bucks (2-1) finished their non-conference slate with wins over Parkers Chapel and Hampton sandwiched between last week’s loss at Junction City.
Hampton (0-2) heads to Star City for their final non-conference game next week.
The Bucks will be off next week before opening play in the 6-3A against Lake Village on Sept. 24.
