Defense shines for Wildcats in road victory

It’s tough to win football games when an offense loses three fumbles in its first nine plays. El Dorado did just that on Friday, beating Sylvan Hills 51-23 behind a defense that kept the game close until the offense found its footing.

The Wildcats forced four turnovers and came up with a game-changing safety in the first half.

“Kids did a great job of having a fireman’s mentality,” said El Dorado defensive coordinator Trey Outlaw. “When the offense turned the ball over, the defense did a great job of coming in and making plays. They put the fire out.

“It’s always good when you force four turnovers and get a safety.”

Damarian Rester recorded the safety to go with six tackles, including two tackles for losses. Marquees Waller had 10 tackles from his safety position with two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and an interception.

Junior nose guard Takoi Steward had 10 tackles with one tackle for loss. Danquez Shelton led the team with 12 tackles, including a sack against the Bears’ triple option.

“Our defense did a brilliant job of flying to the football and playing disciplined,” said head coach Steven Jones. “The triple option is not easy to go against. I thought we played really well defensively.”

Patrick Sixbey and Javin Steward had eight tackles apiece. Mario Ganter had seven tackles and recovered a fumble. Rakel Williams had six tackles. Ahmayus Young had six tackles and forced a fumble. Javen White recovered a fumble.

Sharmon Rester completed 15-of-21 passes for 309 yards and six touchdowns. The senior also had eight rushes for 108 yards and another TD.

“Rester had a good night. He’s getting sharper and sharper each week throwing the football,” said Jones. “He made a big-time throw to RJ Thomas down the sideline. It was one of the best throws I’ve seen all year, an amazing play. Our offense continues to get better.”
