Mayor's moment: Transparency is key

October 11, 2021 at 12:00 a.m.

When I googled "What does transparency mean in a person?" this is one of the results I found: "Transparency has always been a critical component of leadership. When you're transparent, you invite trust by revealing that you have nothing to hide. You establish yourself as an honest, credible person in the eyes of others. ... Transparency is strategic, targeted and purposeful."

Transparency means you have nothing to hide, not that you're perfect. In my efforts to be a transparent leader, I understand there will be criticism alongside the compliments. I welcome both, because they are needed to make us better!

Although no one likes to be criticized, constructive criticism is definitely a tool that refines us all! None of us have all the answers, but all of us can solve any problem when working together!

There are issues that have been hidden that I have made public to better serve our city and to inform our citizens. In some instances partial parts of problems have been shared. Partial processes and procedures don't fully function. There is a reason we are to tell the "whole" truth. Just a part of the truth is a lie.

There is no harm in making mistakes. We learn from them. That is why doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome is the definition of insanity. Many times we don't like it, but we have to understand that failure is always encountered on the road to success!

I stepped into this position having never been a Mayor before. What I do have is the ability to serve people. Serving is power seeking and it's not a prestigious position. Anyone elected by the people should possess a personality that demonstrates service!

The implementation of procedures and processes that better serve our city will require change and cooperation. Our city services will work together for our citizens and our citizens will be well informed to assist in making that happen!

We all live in glass houses when we live transparent lives. Our flaws and failures are seen, but so are our gains and growth! Let's work together to make our city better and be grateful that everyone can see it!
