SouthArk improves to 3-0 with overtime victory

South Arkansas Community College’s women’s basketball team continued their solid start by topping Arkansas Baptist 73-69 in overtime earlier this week.

The Stars’ schedule indicated the game was against Arkansas Baptist’s JV team, but the NAIA school does not have a JV program.

The Stars (3-0) were led by Lexi Pyle and Darbee Forte, who scored 16 points each, and Dyinasty Davis and Cierra Gardner, who had 10 each.

After SouthArk controlled the opening period, Arkansas Baptist took the lead early in the second and SouthArk didn’t get it back until the 2:49 mark in the third on a Christian Marshall free throw.

From there, there were several lead changes and many ties.

After an Addison McNiel 3-pointer with under two seconds left to play unknotted the game to give SouthArk a 62-59 lead, Arkansas Baptist hit a trey of its own at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

But the Stars would not be denied.

With 38 seconds left in the extra session, Forte drilled a 3-pointer to give SouthArk the lead for the final time.

The schools will meet in a rematch on Dec. 14.

The men’s team hosts Faith Prep on Dec. 3.
