Orr’s no-hitter sparks Oilers to home sweep

During his senior year at Junction City, Jacob Orr authored a no-hitter against Mountain Pine.

Now he has one in American Legion play.

On Thursday night, Orr threw his second no-hitter of 2021 to lead the El Dorado Oilers to a 10-0 win over 3-2 Sports in the opening game of a doubleheader. The Oilers completed a sweep by winning a 12-8 slugfest in the nightcap.

Orr walked one and struck out three in a game that ended after five innings due to the sportsmanship rule.

The no-hitter is the third for the Oilers since their return in 2015 with Derek Jobe throwing one in 2018 and Baylor Brumley accomplishing the feat last year.

“Jacob Orr was very efficient. He started most batters with first-pitch strikes,” said Oilers coach Greg Harrison. “The young man was having fun, throwing a heavy ball and keeping it down. He only struck out three, as he wasn’t trying to overpower the hitters.

“He got most outs on slow grounders and popups, keeping his pitch count down and staying fresh. I’m very proud of the work Jacob put out for us this evening.”

Orr got all of the run support he would need in the bottom of the first thanks to an eight-run uprising by the Oilers.

AJ Alsobrook led off the game with bunt single down the third-base line and stole second base.

A walk to Tanner McLelland put runners at first and second, and the Oilers had a pair of runners in scoring position after a double steal.

Tyler Johnson then opened the scoring with a two-run single down the left-field line to give the Oilers the early lead.

Johnson stole second and Landen Rainwater entered the game to run for Johnson.

Ashton Yarbrough was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second, and a second double steal again put two runners in scoring position.

Braden Doherty walked to load the bases and Hunter Lawrence picked up an RBI with a free pass of his own to make it 3-0.

Gabe Richard picked up a painful RBI by getting hit by a pitch to bring home Yarbrough to push the lead to 4-0.

With the bases still loaded, Rhett Richardson cleared the bases by driving the first pitch he saw off the fence in right for a triple to give the Oilers a 7-0 lead.

Brumley drove in the final run of the frame with a ground out to third.

The Oilers scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to cap the scoring in the contest.

In the third, Richard singled home Lawrence, who himself singled with one out and stole second and third base.

Rainwater tripled off the fence in right-center and scored on Alsobrook’s single to center to give the Oilers a two-out run in the fourth.

Orr (1-0) took matters over from there, issuing his lone walk in the second inning.

He finished the no-hitter with a fly out to right in a 1-2-3 fifth.

Orr was also very economical, needing just 65 pitches to complete his gem.

The Oilers finished with nine hits in the win with Alsobrook going 2-for-3 with four stolen bases and an RBI, while Rainwater was 2-for-2 with a pair of stolen bases.

Richardson had three RBIs with Johnson and Richard adding two apiece.

Lawrence and Kolin Parker each had one hit to round out the Oilers’ attack.

As was the case in the opener, the Oilers got out of the gates quickly, scoring four runs in the first in the nightcap.

Alsobrook reached on an infield single and took third on a wild throw to first, and Richard followed with an RBI single to left to open the scoring.

Richard then stole second and third before scoring on a base hit by Chase Brumley to make it 2-0.

Brumley stole second and John Robert Burson walked to put runners at first and second, but Burson would be erased from the base paths on a fielder’s choice.

With two outs, Johnson delivered a single to left to bring home Brumley to push the lead to 3-0.

Johnson then stole second and Baylor Brumley followed with a base hit to right-center to score Johnson to make it 4-0.

However, 3-2 Sports answered with three runs in the second to cut the Oilers’ lead to 4-3.

The Oilers got a run back in the bottom of the second on Tanner McLelland’s sacrifice fly that scored Yarbrough, who walked and stole second and third base.

The Oilers then broke the game open with a six-run third.

Alsobrook got the rally started with a walk and stole second base, and Richard also walked to put runners at first and second.

After a double steal put runners at second and third, Chase Brumley walked to load the bases.

Burson and Doherty drew free passes of their own to score Alsobrook and Richard to push the lead to 7-3.

With the bases still loaded, Johnson delivered a two-run single to left-center to give the Oilers a 9-3 lead.

Rainwater entered the game to run for Johnson and stole second to put runners at second and third, and Baylor Brumley followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 11-3.

The visitors again responded by scoring four runs in the fourth to make it 11-7, but the Oilers answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Chase Brumley that scored Bryan Robertson, who singled and took second on a passed ball.

Robertson (1-0) was also the winning pitcher. In three innings of work, Robertson allowed seven runs with five being earned. He allowed two hits, walked four and struck out three.

Rainwater closed out the sweep, allowing two hits and one run in two innings out of the bullpen. He walked one and struck out four.

The Oilers had 12 hits in the nightcap with Brumley, Johnson and Baylor Brumley each going 2-for-2 in the win.

Chase Brumley had two RBIs and scored two runs, while Johnson and Baylor Brumley each drove in three runs.

Alsobrook, Richard, Parker, Rainwater, Richardson and Robertson each had one hit in the win.

Richard had three stolen bases with Alsobrook adding two. Yarbrough also had two stolen bases and Burson drew three walks.

The Oilers (9-1-1) hit the road for a doubleheader Sunday at Sheridan with game time set for 1:30 p.m.
