Drillers downed in tournament

The El Dorado Drillers got off to a tough start at the Ameriprise Invitational Thursday by dropping their first two games in pool play.

The Drillers were downed 9-1 by the Monroe Junior Buffs before falling 10-8 to Arkansas Pulpwood 16U.

Holden Lowry and Xorian Robinson were each 2-for-3 with the former driving in the Drillers’ lone run in the opener.

Sawyer Cropper and Rhett Richardson were both 1-for-3.

Lowry suffered the loss after surrendering seven runs with only two being earned in five innings of work. He allowed four hits, walked five and struck out seven.

Cason Martin worked a scoreless frame in relief, allowing one hit and recording one strikeout.

Trey Murphy allowed two runs with one being earned in one inning of work. He allowed one hit and walked three.

In their second game of the day, the Drillers closed a 9-2 deficit to a run thanks to a six-run fourth, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Tyler Johnson went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, while Lowry was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and scored a run.

Robinson went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, scored two runs and had an RBI for the Drillers.

Martin was 1-for-2 with a walk, drove in two runs and scored two runs, while Richardson went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Hunter Lawrence took the loss after allowing nine runs with just two being earned over four innings. He gave up four hits, walked five and struck out four.

Jonah Davis worked two innings in relief. He allowed one run, walked three and struck out two. He didn’t allow any hits.
