Junction City falls to Fordyce in district tourney final

FORDYCE – Trey Merritt was one of four players in double figures, as Fordyce used a big third quarter to top Junction City 77-65 to win the 8-2A District Tournament Saturday night.

The Dragons will be the 8-2A’s No. 2 seed for the regional tournament and face Magnet Cove Thursday at 7 p.m. with a berth in the state tournament at stake.

Junction City trailed 21-16 at the end of the first quarter and 39-28 at intermission before the Redbugs outscored the Dragons 19-8 in the third period to take a commanding 58-36 lead.

“We really didn't play with enough intensity on the boards or on defense,” Junction City coach Kendall Hutcheson said. “We allowed way too much penetration and didn't communicate very well on defense. On the offensive end of the floor, we weren't very patient and didn't execute very well. I am very proud of the fourth quarter effort and fight the young men showed. We still just haven’t gotten back to the level we were playing before the long break. We have a lot of work to do before regionals.”

Cam Frazier had 19 points to lead the Dragons, who also got 11 points from Zak Brown and 10 points from Ryan Allen.

In addition to Merritt, Jaylen Parham had 19 points with Mantrell Neal chipping in with 14 points and Ross Smead finished with 13 points for Fordyce.
