Junction City holds off Hampton to advance at district tourney

JUNCTION CITY – Cam Frazier led three players in double figures with 16 points, as Junction City used a 16-0 fourth-quarter run to down Hampton 65-48 in the semifinals of the 8-2A District Tournament Thursday night.

The Dragons will face Fordyce for the championship tonight at Fordyce.

The schools split their two games in the regular season with each winning on their home floor.

Game time is at 6 p.m.

The Dragons led 20-14 at the end of the first quarter and 34-28 at intermission.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to 44-41 at the end of the third quarter before Junction City’s run in the fourth quarter broke the game open.

“I thought we came out in the first quarter OK and jumped to an early lead and then went flat,” Junction City coach Kendall Hutcheson said. “We just weren’t as intense as we needed to be. I think two weeks with no games really showed tonight. Hampton played really hard and we didn’t match their effort in the second and third quarter. I thought our guys really woke up in the fourth and played with urgency. I’m proud of them for finding it when they needed to. Survive and advance is the name of the game this time of year.”

Tanner Barnett had 14 points and Zak Brown chipped in with 13 points for the Dragons.

The Bulldogs, who knocked off Bearden on the road earlier this week to clinch a spot in the regional tournament, also had three players in double figures.

Zy Johnson had 15 points, while Tavion Galbert had 14 points and J’Darius Stephens finished with 13 points.

Hampton will take on Woodlawn in the third-place game today.
