City offices to close for Christmas

by Tia Lyons | December 22, 2021 at 7:56 a.m.

All administrative offices of the city of El Dorado will be closed Friday and Monday for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, respectively.

After polling city employees in November, city department heads relayed to the El Dorado City Council that the general consensus among city workers was to observe the holidays on Dec. 24 and 27.

Per the city employee handbook, if a paid holiday falls on Saturday, then employees are off the preceding Friday.

If the holiday is on Sunday, then the following Monday serves as employees’ paid holiday off.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are paid days off for city employees and since the holidays are on Friday and Saturday this year, Mayor Veronica Smith-Creer asked El Dorado City Council members how they would prefer to observe the holidays and designate city office closings.

The council asked each department head — fire Chief Chad Mosby, police Chief Kenny Hickman, Director of Public Works Robert Edmonds — to poll the employees within their respective departments.

“The consensus is, from everything that I got back from the police chief, the fire chief and from the public works director, the consensus is that we would be off on the Monday after Christmas,” Creer-Smith said during a regular city council meeting on Nov. 18.

City administrative offices, including those in the police and fire departments, will be closed Friday and Monday. Police and fire services will operate as usual.

Smith-Creer said the city will observe New Year’s Day on Dec. 31, during which employees will be off and city administrative offices closed.

Anthony Traylor, city sanitation supervisor, said the city’s curbside garbage collection schedule will remain the same this week and next week.

“We will take off Friday for Christmas, and instead of taking two days, we’ll come back on Monday. It’ll be the same for New Year’s … That’ll be our goal,” Traylor said.

The city ‘s residential garbage pickup schedule is:

• Ward 1, Monday.

• Ward 2, Tuesday.

• Ward 3, Wednesday.

• Ward 4, Thursday.

Commercial pick-up runs are conducted on Friday.

For more information or to report any issues regarding sanitation, call the Department of Public Works at 870-863-4244 or Traylor at 870-866-7258.
