Chad Prather, along with opening act Jesse Peyton, will be bringing the Unapologetic Comedy Tour to El Dorado on Saturday, April 3 at the Murphy Arts District First Financial Music Hall.
“We do a different kind of comedy show,” Prather said. “It not only involves standup but also musical comedy, there is variety here. It is like a throwback to Will Rogers’ days of doing shows.”
Prather was already working in television and radio when he started going viral for videos he would post to his social media. “Unapologetically Southern,” now on his Prather’s YouTube channel has over three million views. In the video, he proudly talks about southern culture and attributes often associated with southern people - for example, the use of ma’am and sir.
Also on Prather’s YouTube channel are clips from his The Chad Prather show through conservative media group, Blaze Media. A lot of the subject matter covered include race, politics and culture that he often intersects with humor.
“In these days, looking at the way of the world, you have to laugh to keep from crying,” Prather said. “Having a sense of humor has always kind of helped me and unfortunately it seems like a lot of people have lost their sense of humor or are too easily offended by humor.”
It is his view on the current state of political and cultural affairs that has led him to start his own gubernatorial campaign in the state of Texas and challenge current governor Greg Abbott in the 2022 GOP primary. Prather announced his run on Friday, March 26.
“At the end of the day, I believe we want the government to get out of the way and let people govern themselves,” Prather said. “So that inspired my desire to run for governor of Texas because I believe the government has grown too big that it has lost touch with people.”
When asked if he will adopt a more traditional campaigning style and lose some of the humor on the campaign trail, Prather said comedy is part of who he is.
“I will never leave the humor behind because I will never lose sight of who I am,” Prather said. “It won’t be comedy per say, but I do think we can speak to people through humor. We’re serious on the issues and we don’t want humor to get in the way of that, but at the same time, I don’t want to change who I am because of the nature of the job I’m running for.”
“At the end of the night we want people to laugh,” Prather said. “We want them to laugh specifically at themselves. We want them to be able to laugh at the circumstances of the country around us because I’ve always said, if Washington D.C. is going to write the jokes, we might as well tell them.”
Prather also said that he is an equal opportunity comedian and does not mind poking fun at people on either side of the political aisle.
