COVID-related death, two new local cases reported

The Arkansas Department of Health reported three new COVID-19 cases in Union County Monday, bringing the cumulative number of cases identified locally to 894. The local cases reported Monday were made up of 871 confirmed cases, up one from Sunday, and 23 probable cases, up one from Sunday.

The United States Centers for Disease Control advises that positive PCR (polymerase chain reaction) COVID-19 tests be considered confirmed cases and positive antigen tests, which the agency says are less sensitive, be considered probable cases.

One Union County resident’s death that was attributed to COVID-19 was reported Monday as well. Thirty-seven local residents have died as a result of the virus, indicating a local COVID mortality rate — the percentage of those who have contracted COVID-19 and died as a result of it — of 4.1%.

The number of COVID recoveries in Union County increased by two Monday to reach 823 people considered recovered from the virus. There were 33 active cases of the virus in Union County Monday, down one from Sunday and representing 3.7% of all the cases identified locally. Active cases in Union County Monday were made up of 27 confirmed cases and six probable cases.

A nursing home report produced by the ADH detailing COVID-19 cases in nursing homes across the state dated Sept. 25 reported several deaths and a number of active cases in local nursing homes.

According to the report, five residents of Hudson Memorial Nursing Home and seven residents of Timberlane Health and Rehab have died as a result of the virus. The report does not include the dates of those residents’ deaths.

Additionally, according to the report, there were 75 active cases of COVID-19 among residents and workers at four of the nursing homes in Union County. The report says there were three active resident cases, two active worker cases and four recovered workers at Advanced Health and Rehab of Union County; 47 active resident cases, 18 active worker cases and 13 recovered workers, along with the five deceased residents, at Hudson; one active worker case at Oak Ridge Health and Rehab; and four active resident cases and eight recovered workers, along with the seven deceased residents, at Timberlane.

In the Southwest Public Health Region, where Union County is located, there were 101 people hospitalized due to the virus Monday, including 40 in intensive care units and 23 on ventilator support.

The ADH reported 654 new negative test results returned from Union County Monday, indicating a one-day local positivity rate of .3% based on the number of new cases and results reported. In all, 9,970 COVID-19 test results have returned from Union County, including 9,076 negatives, indicating an overall local positivity rate of 9%.

An ADH spokesperson said a number of test results were added Monday from one laboratory where tests are sent for processing.

The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Arkansas grew by 807 Monday to reach 82,049. The cases in Arkansas Monday were made up of 79,521 confirmed cases, up 786 from Sunday, and 2,528 probable cases, up 21 from Sunday.

There were 73,573 Arkansans considered recovered from the virus Monday, up 971 from Sunday. Active cases in the state decreased by 185 Monday to 7,142, representing 8.7% of all the cases in Arkansas. The active cases in the state Monday included 6,824 confirmed cases and 318 probable cases.

There were 21 deaths attributable to COVID-19 reported throughout the state Monday, bringing Arkansas’ death toll to 1,329, indicating a state COVID mortality rate of 1.6%. There were 491 Arkansans hospitalized due to the virus on Monday, including 231 in ICUs and 99 on ventilator support.

The state surpassed a milestone today, with 1,008,047 COVID-19 test results returned to the ADH, including 925,786 negatives, indicating a total positivity rate for the state of 8.1%.

At 3 p.m. Monday, Johns Hopkins University reported 7,134,874 COVID-19 cases in the United States. Of those, 2,766,280 people were considered recovered, leaving 4,163,689 cases — 58.4% — active nationwide. There had been 204,905 deaths attributable to the virus in the U.S. by Monday afternoon, indicating a national COVID mortality rate of 2.9%.

Johns Hopkins reported 33,224,222 COVID-19 cases worldwide Monday afternoon. Of those, 22,975,298 people were considered recovered, leaving 9,249,626 cases — 27.8% — active around the world. There had been 999,298 deaths attributable to the virus by Monday afternoon, indicating a global COVID mortality rate of 3%.
